I have followed the uploaded mandate’s central rule: use the same analytical architecture, but do not force economically inappropriate models onto financial/capital-market businesses. The report therefore distinguishes reported figures, my calculations, and valuation assumptions rather than treating a stock-screening ratio as an investment conclusion.
Executive Summary
The three companies are exposed to the digitisation of Indian finance, but their economics are quite different.

| Balance-sheet character | Very low corporate debt | Funding-intensive broker | Large net-cash position |
| Current earnings profile | Very high profitability | Profitable but cyclical | Profitability inflecting |
| Key question | Can exceptional growth persist long enough to support valuation? | Can diversification offset broking/regulatory cyclicality? | Can operating margins scale enough to justify the valuation? |
*TTM figures are calculated from FY26 plus Q1 FY27 minus Q1 FY26 and therefore should be viewed as analytical approximations rather than company-reported TTM figures.
Current price/market-cap data are based on 24 September 2026 closes. (Business Standard)
My central interpretation is:
Groww: fundamentally the strongest current earnings machine of the three. Growth, operating margins, customer assets and balance-sheet characteristics are impressive. But the market already capitalises that quality very aggressively. A simple reverse valuation exercise indicates that today’s price requires something close to extraordinary earnings growth for several more years under conservative cash-conversion assumptions.
Angel One: economically different from Groww despite being its closest listed comparison. Its current valuation embeds materially lower expectations, but the company carries greater exposure to market turnover, derivatives regulation and the economics of its client-funding/MTF book. Wealth, asset management, credit distribution and insurance are strategically important because they could make earnings less transaction-dependent.
Paytm: has undergone the largest fundamental change. FY26 was its first full year of reported profitability, and Q1 FY27 continued the improvement. (Paytm) However, the stock is valued much more like a future high-margin financial platform than the business reflected in today’s earnings. Consequently, the investment case rests much more heavily on future margin expansion than either Groww or Angel One.
None of those statements means “best,” “buy,” “sell” or “hold.” They describe what expectations the current prices appear to contain.
Data confidence: High for prices/current quarterly performance; Medium for TTM and valuation-model outputs because these require normalization assumptions.

For Groww and Angel, I deliberately do not report a conventional enterprise value as though cash, borrowings and financial assets were industrial-company cash/debt. Much of a broker’s balance sheet is operational/client-funding related.
For Paytm, using the company’s June 2026 cash-balance figure of ₹13,529 crore and approximately ₹172 crore of FY26 debt gives an indicative net-cash-adjusted EV of roughly ₹97,900 crore. The definition of “cash balance” is broader than accounting cash-and-cash-equivalents, so this is an analytical approximation. (Business Standard)
Data confidence: High for market data; Medium for EV/P-B normalization.
Business Model Comparison
Groww
Groww has evolved from a mutual-fund investment interface into a broad retail investment platform encompassing stocks, ETFs, IPOs, MTF, equity/commodity derivatives, mutual funds, credit and asset management. As of 24 September it reported 23.5 million transacting users, ₹3.77 trillion customer assets, ₹133.08 billion SIP inflows and a ₹41.03 billion MTF net book. (Groww)
Its attractive economic characteristics are digital distribution, a huge customer base, low marginal servicing costs, and substantial operating leverage. The corresponding weakness is that trading-linked revenue remains inherently market-sensitive.
Angel One
Angel remains a transaction-oriented capital-market franchise but is deliberately constructing additional earnings pools: wealth, credit distribution, asset management and insurance.
Q1 FY27 illustrates this transition. Gross revenue reached ₹1,433.7 crore, PAT ₹231.4 crore, average client-funding book ₹6,140 crore, wealth AUM ₹13,440 crore and credit distribution ₹530 crore. Wealth AUM was up 165% YoY and credit distribution about 130%, while SIP counts declined YoY—evidence that diversification is progressing but is not uniformly strong. (FinancialFilings)
Paytm
Paytm increasingly resembles a payments network + merchant platform + financial-services distributor rather than a wallet company.
The fundamental advantage is enormous merchant/customer distribution that can be monetised through subscriptions/devices, payment processing and distribution of financial products without necessarily retaining credit risk on Paytm’s own balance sheet.
The business therefore needs to be judged on payment volumes, merchant monetisation, contribution/EBITDA margin, financial-services distribution revenue and cash generation—not only transactions or user numbers.
Data confidence: High.
Industry & Competitive Landscape
Retail financial participation remains structurally favourable to all three companies, but regulation is unusually important. SEBI published fresh studies in August 2026 on individual behaviour and profitability in equity derivatives, underscoring continued scrutiny of retail derivatives participation. (Securities and Exchange Board of India)
For Groww and Angel One, major competitive pressures include Zerodha, Upstox, Dhan, traditional bank brokers, wealth platforms and increasingly integrated financial apps.
For Paytm, the competitive set includes PhonePe, Google Pay, banks, payment processors, merchant-acquiring businesses and financial-product marketplaces.
Moat framework
Scores below are my analytical assessments—not measured facts and not investment recommendations.
| Moat component /10 | Groww | Angel | Paytm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand | 9 | 8 | 9 |
| Network effects | 6 | 5 | 8 |
| Switching costs | 5 | 5 | 6 |
| Cost advantage | 8 | 7 | 7 |
| Scale | 9 | 8 | 9 |
| Distribution | 9 | 8 | 10 |
| Proprietary/IP advantage | 4 | 4 | 5 |
| Regulatory barriers | 6 | 7 | 7 |
| Data advantage | 8 | 7 | 9 |
| Customer ecosystem | 8 | 8 | 9 |
| Capital advantage | 8 | 8 | 9 |
| Interpretation | Strong, but switching cost modest | Moderate–strong | Strong distribution/network moat |
The main qualification for Paytm is important: a strong network does not eliminate regulatory risk. The Paytm Payments Bank episode demonstrates how regulation can materially alter ecosystem economics.
Data confidence: Medium because moat scoring is necessarily analytical rather than reported.
Financial Health
Historical revenue and PAT
₹ crore, consolidated; figures rounded.
| FY | Groww revenue | Groww PAT | Angel revenue | Angel PAT | Paytm revenue | Paytm PAT |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FY22 | — | — | 2,292 | 625 | 4,974 | -2,396 |
| FY23 | 1,142 | 458 | 3,002 | 890 | 7,990 | -1,776 |
| FY24 | 2,609 | -805 | 4,272 | 1,126 | 9,978 | -1,422 |
| FY25 | 3,902 | 1,824 | 5,239 | 1,172 | 6,900 | -663 |
| FY26 | 4,645 | 2,083 | 5,138 | 915 | 8,437 | 552 |
Groww’s FY24 loss needs a major normalization: the company identifies a ₹1,339.7 crore one-time tax expense associated with redomiciling from the U.S. to India. (Groww) Paytm officially reported FY26 operating revenue ₹8,437 crore, +22% YoY, EBITDA ₹502 crore and PAT ₹552 crore. (Paytm)
Historical Groww and Angel figures above were reconciled against available reported/database financial statements; because presentation classifications differ across providers, small differences may arise between “sales,” “revenue from operations” and “total income.” (ET Money)
Growth calculations
- Groww FY23→FY26 revenue CAGR: ~59.6%
- Groww PAT CAGR over the same endpoints: ~65.7%, but the intermediate FY24 redomicile tax makes the sequence non-normal.
- Angel FY23→FY26 revenue CAGR: ~19.6%
- Angel FY23→FY26 PAT CAGR: ~0.9%
- Paytm FY22→FY26 revenue CAGR: ~14.1%
- Paytm PAT CAGR: not meaningful, because earnings changed from losses to profit.
Balance-sheet snapshot
| FY26 metric | Groww | Angel | Paytm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equity | ~₹9,651 Cr | ~₹6,118 Cr | ~₹16,026 Cr |
| Borrowings/debt | ~₹224 Cr | ~₹7,951 Cr | ~₹172 Cr |
| Mechanical D/E | 0.02x | 1.30x | 0.01x |
| Approx ROE | ~29% | ~15–16% | ~3.6% |
| Approx ROCE | ~29% | ~15% | ~3–4% |
The critical caveat is Angel: ₹7,951 crore of borrowing cannot be interpreted like ₹7,951 crore of manufacturing-company debt. A substantial amount finances client funding/MTF and financial assets. It nevertheless creates real liquidity, collateral and credit-risk exposure.
Data confidence: Medium–High.
Earnings Quality
Groww
The headline mismatch—very high PAT but weak mechanical operating cash flow—looks alarming until the brokerage balance sheet is examined. Changes in financial assets, client balances, MTF and regulatory balances move through operating cash flow.
So I would not conclude that Groww’s accounting earnings are fictitious simply because CFO/PAT looks poor.
Items worth monitoring are:
- rapid MTF growth;
- ESOP issuance and recurring option grants—the company disclosed multiple grants during July–September; (Groww)
- substantial early-investor monetisation;
- promoter-group encumbrance/pledge reported in the June shareholding filing, although small relative to total company equity;
- subsidiary CARO observations in the annual-report disclosures, which deserve reading in context rather than being labelled fraud or a parent-company qualified opinion. (FinancialFilings)
Angel One
Mechanical FY26 operating cash flow was significantly negative while PAT remained positive, but once again the principal explanation is the expansion of brokerage/client-funding financial assets rather than ordinary receivable deterioration.
More informative is the operating sensitivity: FY26 revenue was roughly flat/down slightly from FY25 while PAT fell materially, demonstrating the earnings sensitivity to product mix, regulation and transaction economics.
Paytm
The quality of earnings is moving in the right direction because operating EBITDA is now positive.
But the distinction between operating earnings and treasury/other income remains important. In Q1 FY27 Paytm generated approximately ₹203 crore EBITDA and ₹220 crore PAT, while other income was around ₹182 crore. Thus the operating turnaround is real, but treasury income remains material to bottom-line profit. (Screener)
The additional earnings-quality issue is ESOP dilution, which remains meaningful for a technology company with a large equity-compensation pool.
Data confidence: Medium.
Piotroski F-Score
Your framework correctly instructs that sector-inappropriate models should not be blindly applied.
The mechanical test looks roughly like this:
| Signal | Groww | Angel | Paytm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Positive NI | Pass | Pass | Pass |
| Positive conventional CFO | Fail / distorted | Fail / distorted | Weak/distorted |
| ROA improving | Mixed | Fail FY26 | Pass |
| CFO > NI | Fail/distorted | Fail/distorted | Fail |
| Lower leverage | Pass | Fail mechanically | Essentially stable/very low |
| Current ratio improved | Mixed | N/M | N/M |
| No meaningful dilution | Fail | Mixed | Fail |
| Gross margin improved | N/M | N/M | N/M |
| Asset turnover improved | Mixed | Weak | Improving |
Formal conclusion
Piotroski F-Score: Not reliably calculable from currently available data in an economically meaningful way.
Giving Groww, Angel and Paytm an apparently precise X/9 would create false comparability, because several of the nine signals were designed for non-financial industrial businesses.
Data confidence: High in the decision not to force the score.
Altman Z-Score
Groww
Altman Z-Score: Not appropriate for this company.
Angel One
Altman Z-Score: Not appropriate for this company.
Paytm
Altman Z-Score: Not appropriate for this company.
Altman’s conventional working-capital/assets and retained-earnings/assets formulation is particularly problematic for brokers and financial platforms, whose financial assets/liabilities are operational.
The more useful distress measures here are net cash/funding structure, regulatory capital, funding liquidity, profitability and access to capital.
Data confidence: High.
ROIC / WACC
A literal industrial ROIC calculation also creates problems, particularly for brokers. I therefore use ROE/ROCE versus cost of equity as an economic-return proxy.
Cost-of-equity assumptions
I use:
- Indian 10-year government yield proxy: ~7.1%
- Equity-risk premium: 5.5% assumption
- Beta/proxy: Groww 1.21, Angel ~1.17, Paytm ~1.58
- CAPM = Rf + β × ERP
This produces approximate cost-of-equity hurdles:
| Groww | Angel | Paytm | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost of equity | ~13.8% | ~13.5% | ~15.8% |
| Current ROE/ROCE proxy | ~29% | ~15% | ~3–4% |
| Economic-return interpretation | Materially above hurdle | Modestly above hurdle | Present return still below hurdle |
Angel’s observed beta is around 1.17 in current market datasets. (mint) The Groww beta is particularly low-confidence because it has traded for less than a year.
Interpretation: Groww’s current operating economics are genuinely powerful. Angel currently earns around its cost-of-capital range. Paytm must achieve substantially greater operating profitability before its accounting return on capital catches up to what equity investors normally require.
Data confidence: Medium/Low because beta, normalized capital and WACC assumptions are model-dependent.
DCF Valuation
This is the part of the analysis where false precision is most dangerous.
Your framework explicitly requires DCF sensitivity and says not to present DCF as objective truth.
For Groww and Angel, conventional industrial FCFF is badly distorted by client-funding balance sheets. I therefore use a normalized equity cash-earnings/FCFE proxy:
For Paytm, where today’s PAT is still emerging from a low base, I instead model revenue growth, future net margin and cash conversion.
Groww DCF
TTM PAT starting point: ~₹2,440 crore.
| Scenario | 5Y PAT growth | Cash conversion | Discount rate | Terminal g | Model value/share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bear | 12% | 70% | 15.5% | 5.0% | ₹36 |
| Base | 20% | 75% | 13.8% | 5.5% | ₹66 |
| Bull | 40% | 85% | 12.5% | 6.5% | ₹209 |
| Market | ₹186.55 |
This is striking. Even a 20% five-year PAT CAGR does not get close to today’s market price under conservative cash conversion.
A reverse calculation says that, using the base 75% conversion/13.8% discount/5.5% terminal-growth structure, the market price requires roughly 50% annual PAT growth for five years.
That is not a forecast that Groww cannot do it. It is a statement about how demanding the current valuation is.
Groww sensitivity, ₹/share
| Ke \ terminal g | 4.5% | 5.5% | 6.5% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12.5% | 70 | 79 | 89 |
| 13.8% | 60 | 66 | 73 |
| 15.0% | 53 | 57 | 62 |
Angel One DCF
TTM normalized PAT: ~₹1,032 crore.
| Scenario | 5Y PAT growth | Cash conversion | Discount | Terminal g | Model value |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bear | 5% | 70% | 15% | 4.5% | ₹80 |
| Base | 12% | 75% | 13.5% | 5% | ₹139 |
| Bull | 25% | 85% | 12% | 6% | ₹361 |
| Market | ₹290.70 |
The same reverse calculation implies roughly 32% five-year PAT CAGR to mathematically reconcile the current share price with the base discount/cash-conversion assumptions.
Angel therefore also needs a substantial earnings acceleration—but materially less extreme than Groww’s implied path.
Angel sensitivity
| Ke \ terminal g | 4% | 5% | 6% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12.5% | 143 | 158 | 177 |
| 13.5% | 127 | 139 | 153 |
| 14.5% | 115 | 124 | 134 |
Paytm DCF
TTM revenue: ~₹8,967 crore.
A company-reported June cash balance of ₹13,529 crore gives Paytm a substantial valuation cushion, but the dominant variable is future operating margin. (Business Standard)
| Scenario | Revenue-growth path | Yr-5 net margin | Cash conversion | Ke | Tg | Model value |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bear | ~18% p.a. | 10% | 60% | 18% | 5% | ₹295 |
| Base | 25→16% | 15% | 70% | 15.9% | 6% | ₹440 |
| Bull | 32→22% | 20% | 80% | 14.5% | 6.5% | ₹793 |
| Market | ₹1,735.50 |
Even the bull scenario remains well below the market price.
That should not be interpreted as “Paytm is worth ₹793.” Rather, it shows that today’s market price is capitalising economics more ambitious than a 20% year-five net margin under my bull growth assumptions.
Paytm sensitivity, base operating scenario
| Ke \ terminal g | 5% | 6% | 7% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14.5% | 460 | 485 | 517 |
| 15.9% | 422 | 440 | 462 |
| 17.5% | 389 | 402 | 417 |
Margin of Safety under the requested formula
| Bear | Base | Bull | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Groww | -421% | -185% | +10.5% |
| Angel | -262% | -110% | +19.5% |
| Paytm | -488% | -294% | -119% |
Negative figures greater than 100% simply mean that the market price is several times the model value; they are a consequence of the requested formula, not an error.
Data confidence: Low–Medium. These are transparent scenario models, not price targets.
DDM Valuation
Groww
DDM: Not appropriate for this company. No meaningful dividend history.
Paytm
DDM: Not appropriate for this company. Capital reinvestment and emerging profitability dominate.
Angel One
Angel does pay dividends. The first FY27 interim dividend was ₹1 per post-split share, paid in July 2026. (Angel One)
However, payouts vary materially with earnings and capital needs. A Gordon Growth DDM would therefore give an artificially precise number and is not a useful primary valuation model.
Data confidence: High.
Comparable Valuation
Because direct peers such as Zerodha, Upstox and PhonePe are unlisted, there is no perfect listed peer set.
The most internally consistent comparison is therefore the three businesses themselves:
| Metric | Groww | Angel | Paytm |
|---|---|---|---|
| TTM P/E | ~48x | ~26x | ~171x |
| P/S | ~22x | ~4.9x | ~12.4x |
| P/B | ~12.1x | ~4.35x | ~6.94x |
| Dividend yield | Nil | ~1–2% normalized vicinity | Nil |
| EV/EBITDA | Low relevance | Low relevance | ~very high / >100x |
| FCF yield | Distorted by broker balance sheet | Distorted by funding book | Currently low/weak |
| PEG | Not reliable | Not reliable | Not meaningful on emerging PAT |
A cheap multiple is not automatically favourable. Angel’s lower multiples partly reflect more mature growth and higher market-cycle/funding exposure; Groww’s premium reflects dramatically better current growth and margins; Paytm’s multiples mainly reflect expected future profitability rather than today’s earnings.
Data confidence: Medium–High.
Value Factor
On present earnings:
Groww: expensive relative to reported earnings and especially revenue, but backed by unusually high margins and growth.
Angel: substantially lower earnings/revenue multiples, but its earnings base is more cyclical.
Paytm: current earnings yield is only around 0.6% at the calculated ~171x P/E. Most of the valuation therefore represents future earnings rather than current earning power.
Approximate earnings yields:
| Earnings yield | |
|---|---|
| Groww | ~2.1% |
| Angel | ~3.9% |
| Paytm | ~0.6% |
Data confidence: High mathematically; Medium economically because TTM normalization matters.
Quality Factor
| Quality attribute | Groww | Angel | Paytm |
|---|---|---|---|
| ROE | Very strong | Moderate | Low, improving |
| Balance sheet | Strong | Funding intensive | Very strong net cash |
| Current margin | Very high | Healthy | Early-stage positive |
| Profit stability | Short listed history | Cyclical | Recently turned positive |
| Cash-flow interpretability | Low | Low | Medium |
| Capital efficiency | High | Moderate | Currently low |
| Earnings diversification | Improving | Improving | Improving |
Groww’s June 2026 quarterly financials show PAT of ₹735 crore, versus ₹378 crore a year earlier, and EBITDA of roughly ₹1,017 crore. (Groww)
Paytm’s quality story is very different: the attractive asset is the balance sheet and distribution network, while return on capital still has substantial room to improve.
Data confidence: Medium–High.
Growth Factor
Groww
The historical growth is extraordinary. Q1 FY27 PAT of ₹735 crore was almost twice the corresponding ₹378 crore, while quarterly revenue reached roughly ₹1,549 crore. (Groww)
The important question is no longer whether Groww has grown rapidly. It is whether it can sustain something remotely close to that pace from a market capitalization already exceeding ₹1.17 lakh crore.
Angel One
FY26 represented a pause: revenue softened and PAT contracted. Q1 FY27 then produced:
- gross revenue +25.4% YoY;
- EBDAT +85.1%;
- PAT +102.1%;
- wealth AUM +165%;
- client-funding book +46%;
- credit distribution +130%. (FinancialFilings)
But orders declined sequentially and unique SIPs were weaker YoY. It is therefore a reacceleration with mixed underlying indicators, not yet proof of a permanent new earnings trajectory.
Paytm
FY26 revenue grew 22% and produced the first full-year PAT profit. Q1 FY27 then reached approximately ₹2,448 crore revenue and ₹220 crore PAT, representing about 28% and 79% YoY growth respectively. (Paytm)
Paytm has the greatest scope for margin-led earnings growth because its present margins remain far below mature platform economics.
Data confidence: High for historical/quarterly growth; Low–Medium for forward growth.

(Dhan)
Groww is below its short/intermediate averages but remains above the 200-day line. Angel shows a similar pattern. Paytm retains the strongest medium-term price momentum, although the 24 September close had moved below its shortest moving averages after approaching its 52-week high.
For Groww, any website publishing three-year or full one-year historical performance is obviously problematic because the stock only listed in November 2025. I discarded such figures rather than reproducing them.
Historical volatility, Sharpe, Sortino and full-period maximum drawdown are not reliably calculable from the currently verified total-return series, particularly for Groww.
Data confidence: Medium.
Management & Governance
Groww
The founder-led culture and execution record deserve credit from an analytical standpoint, but important governance-monitoring items exist:
- continuing ESOP grants; (Groww)
- rapid changes in ownership following the IPO;
- small reported promoter-group encumbrance;
- subsidiary CARO observations;
- high-growth MTF requiring disciplined underwriting and collateral controls.
Angel One
Dinesh Thakkar remains Chairman & MD; Ambarish Kenghe is Group CEO and Vineet Agrawal Group CFO. (Angel One)
Angel’s corporate filings also disclose a SEBI settlement order during FY27, which deserves monitoring as a compliance/governance item. A settlement order should not be presented as proof of misconduct beyond the facts specified in the order. (Angel One)
Paytm
The major governance/regulatory items are more material.
SEBI issued a show-cause notice dated 11 August 2026 to certain key managerial personnel concerning timing of disclosure and the treatment of information associated with a December 2023 announcement. It is a notice/proceeding—not a final finding. (BazaarWatch)
Separately, RBI cancelled the banking licence of Paytm Payments Bank Ltd in April 2026, and the entity subsequently moved into winding-up proceedings. The regulatory action concerns PPBL rather than One 97 Communications itself, but remains a significant part of the wider Paytm ecosystem’s regulatory history. (Paytm Bank)
Data confidence: High.
Shareholding Analysis
Groww — June 2026
Promoter/promoter group held approximately 27.1%; mutual funds about 8.7% and FPIs roughly 6.9%. (Groww Resources)
Two subsequent transactions are notable:
- Ribbit Capital sold approximately 1.8% in August;
- Peak XV sold about 1.46% in September, reducing its stake to roughly 14.2%. (Moneycontrol)
This is not evidence that insiders think the company is weak—venture investors routinely monetize after listings—but it creates a real secondary-supply overhang worth monitoring.
Angel — June 2026
Approximately:
- Promoter: 28.59%
- FII/FPI: 13.76%
- Mutual funds: 18.33%
- Insurance: 0.86%
- Other/public: balance
The promoter percentage declined only marginally quarter-on-quarter, while institutional ownership increased.
Paytm — June 2026
Paytm has no conventional promoter classification. June holdings were approximately:
- FII/FPI: 48.09%
- DII: 24.87%
- Mutual funds: 17.94%
- other holders: balance. (The Economic Times)
Domestic institutional ownership has increased substantially over the past year. Paytm had already reported majority domestic ownership by March 2026. (Paytm)
After quarter-end, Resilient Asset Management sold about 3% of Paytm through block trades in August. (Moneycontrol)
Data confidence: High.

Groww’s official IR metrics and announcements support the operating and credit-rating developments. (Groww) Angel’s announcement page confirms current regulatory filings, option grants and Q2 results scheduled for 15 October 2026. (Angel One) Paytm’s filings include the Luxembourg licence and ongoing ESOP allotments. (Paytm Investor Relations)
One caveat on UPI MDR: reporting in September indicated movement toward MDR on some higher-value merchant UPI transactions, but publicly reported implementation details changed during the day and I did not find a primary RBI/NPCI circular in this research crawl that I would use to lock the exact economics. I therefore treat it as a potential catalyst rather than base-case revenue.
Data confidence: High, except UPI-MDR specifics: Medium/Low.
Bull Case
Groww
The strongest version of the thesis is that Groww becomes India’s dominant full-stack retail investment and wealth platform.
That requires:
- users and customer assets continuing to compound;
- successful cross-selling beyond basic broking;
- MTF, wealth, AMC and credit materially enlarging addressable revenue;
- exceptional margins remaining structurally sustainable;
- customer acquisition benefits from the brand/scale loop;
- earnings growing sufficiently fast to absorb today’s premium valuation.
The mathematical requirement is demanding: the DCF shows that something approaching 40%+ multi-year earnings growth starts to make today’s valuation much easier to support.
Angel One
The strongest thesis is not merely “broking volumes recover.” It is that Angel successfully converts a large broking customer base into a diversified financial-services franchise.
If wealth, AMC, lending distribution and insurance become large profit pools while client acquisition stabilizes, today’s ~26x TTM earnings multiple can support a fundamentally different earnings mix.
Paytm
Paytm’s bull case is mostly a margin story.
Its distribution network already exists. If payment-processing economics improve, merchant subscription monetisation deepens and financial-services distribution scales without Paytm assuming major balance-sheet credit risk, incremental revenue could carry high contribution margins.
In that case, current PAT significantly understates normalized future profitability.
Data confidence: Low–Medium because these are scenarios.
Bear Case
Groww
The bear case does not require the business to fail.
It merely requires:
- growth normalising from extraordinary to merely good;
- derivatives regulation reducing activity/revenue;
- competition keeping brokerage/product pricing low;
- MTF credit costs increasing;
- operating margins normalising;
- large pre-IPO investors continuing to sell;
- valuation de-rating.
At ~48x current earnings and >20x sales, even good operational performance could coexist with disappointing share-price returns if expectations decline.
Angel One
The principal risks are:
- structurally lower derivatives activity;
- funding-book credit/liquidity stress;
- lower customer acquisition;
- wealth/AMC diversification taking longer than expected;
- persistent margin pressure;
- further compliance/regulatory costs.
Paytm
The bear case is straightforward:
- operating margins plateau well below the levels assumed by the valuation;
- payments remain structurally low-take-rate;
- financial-services growth slows;
- competitors constrain monetisation;
- regulatory intervention raises cost or limits products;
- ESOP dilution remains high;
- valuation compresses before profits catch up.
At ~170x current TTM PAT, Paytm’s share price is particularly sensitive to the speed, not merely the direction, of profitability improvement.
Data confidence: Medium.

Multi-Model Scorecard
Following the framework’s requested weighting, but using the score purely as a standardized research summary rather than a prediction.
| Category | Weight | Groww | Angel | Paytm | Main reason |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business quality | 10% | 88 | 80 | 82 | Scale/distribution |
| Financial quality | 10% | 88 | 72 | 55 | Returns/profitability |
| Earnings quality | 7% | 68 | 58 | 60 | Cash-flow/other-income caveats |
| Growth | 10% | 92 | 65 | 84 | Historical + latest quarter |
| Value | 10% | 35 | 62 | 20 | Current multiples |
| DCF valuation | 10% | 25 | 52 | 15 | Scenario requirements |
| ROIC/WACC | 7% | 95 | 60 | 35 | Return vs hurdle |
| Moat | 8% | 82 | 74 | 84 | Distribution/network |
| Management/governance | 8% | 80 | 74 | 64 | Regulatory/ownership factors |
| Balance sheet/risk | 8% | 80 | 62 | 75 | Funding vs net cash |
| Momentum | 5% | 52 | 55 | 88 | Market trend |
| Industry position | 7% | 90 | 78 | 88 | Structural opportunity |
| Weighted analytical score | 100% | 72.5 | 66.4 | 60.7 |
Do not interpret the total as an ordering of expected future returns. Notice what the score is actually saying: Groww’s fundamental categories are offset by valuation; Paytm’s powerful growth/momentum/distribution categories are offset by current profitability and valuation; Angel occupies a less extreme position across most dimensions.
Data confidence: Medium.

Groww investment-decision profile
Fundamental: exceptional current profitability and growth.
Valuation: large expectations already embedded.
Growth: strongest historical compounding among the three.
Quality: high return on equity/capital.
Risk: valuation + regulatory + MTF + shareholder supply.
Technical: presently softer than fundamentals.
Thesis requires: sustained 30–50% class earnings expansion for a meaningful period if today’s valuation is to look ordinary.
Thesis invalidation: sharp user/activity slowdown, falling margins, MTF credit problems or sustained regulatory reduction in high-value trading revenues.
Monitor: transacting users, customer assets, revenue/user, derivatives mix, MTF book, PAT margin, ESOP dilution.
Angel One investment-decision profile
Fundamental: profitable franchise with meaningful scale.
Valuation: least demanding of the three on current earnings.
Growth: historical earnings have plateaued, but Q1 shows strong reacceleration.
Quality: reasonable returns, but funding-intensive.
Risk: capital-market cycle, F&O regulation, client funding.
Technical: broadly neutral.
Thesis requires: diversification becoming a meaningful profit contributor and Q1 earnings recovery persisting.
Thesis invalidation: declining transaction economics without offsetting wealth/AMC/credit growth.
Monitor: orders, ADTO, revenue per order, funding book, credit costs, wealth AUM, AMC AUM, regulatory actions.
Paytm investment-decision profile
Fundamental: genuine profitability transition.
Valuation: current earnings explain only a small fraction of market capitalization.
Growth: attractive, with unusually large margin-expansion optionality.
Quality: balance sheet strong; returns on equity/capital still low.
Risk: valuation, execution and regulation.
Technical: strongest price trend of the three.
Thesis requires: EBITDA/net margin rising substantially while growth remains healthy.
Thesis invalidation: margins plateauing in single digits, material payments regulation, weaker financial-services monetisation or renewed large operating losses.
Monitor: payment GMV, merchant subscriptions/devices, financial-services distribution, EBITDA margin, FCF, ESOP dilution, regulatory filings.
Key Differences
Three numbers summarize why these stocks behave differently:
Groww: ~47% TTM net margin.
Its debate is primarily duration of extraordinary economics versus valuation.
Angel: ~26x earnings versus ~1.3x mechanical D/E.
Its debate is valuation/diversification versus cyclicality and funding risk.
Paytm: ~171x current earnings but ₹13,529 crore cash balance.
Its debate is future operating leverage versus very high embedded expectations.
What changed recently?
Groww: the company went public only in November 2025; Q1 FY27 continued extremely strong profit expansion, while several large venture shareholders have since monetized stock.
Angel: FY26 earnings pressure has been followed by a sharp Q1 rebound, with wealth/credit becoming much more visible in the growth mix. Angel also completed a 1:10 stock split effective 26 February 2026, which explains the much lower current quoted share price versus its pre-split history. (Business Standard)
Paytm: the crucial change is from “path to profitability” to actual reported profitability. FY26 was profitable and Q1 FY27 remained profitable, while regulatory history and valuation remain material counterweights.
What Could Change the Analysis?
For Groww, the single biggest positive change would be evidence that 40%+ earnings compounding can persist without margin deterioration. A sustained slowdown below ~20% while the multiple remained near today’s level would change the valuation calculus substantially.
For Angel, the most important change would be proof that wealth, AMC, credit and insurance can drive earnings independently of trading volumes. Q2 FY27 results are currently scheduled for 15 October 2026. (Angel One)
For Paytm, watch operating margins rather than headline user growth. A progression from an ~8% quarterly EBITDA margin toward the mid-teens while maintaining 20%+ revenue growth would materially improve the valuation mathematics. Conversely, revenue growth without corresponding margin expansion would weaken the economic case.
Data Limitations
There are several important ones.
- Groww has less than one year of listed-market history, making beta, 1-year momentum, drawdown and technical comparisons inherently weaker.
- Conventional CFO/FCF, current ratio, net debt, Altman Z and industrial-company ROIC calculations are not comparable across brokerages and payment platforms.
- Some historical series classify “revenue,” “revenue from operations” and “total income” differently. I used primary sources when possible and did not silently reconcile conflicting definitions, in accordance with your validation rule.
- Forward analyst estimates, PEG and forward P/E vary significantly between providers. I have therefore not inserted a consensus number merely to complete the table.
- The DCF is intentionally assumption-driven. For companies with financial/brokerage balance sheets, cash-earnings valuation is more interpretable than pretending ordinary FCFF is precise.
- Q2 FY27 results for these companies are not yet reported as of the 25 September 2026 research date; Q1 FY27 is therefore the latest completed quarterly financial period used in this report.
