EAF versus traditional Indian steel producers
The main difference is the production route. EAF steelmaking melts scrap and/or DRI using electricity, while traditional integrated plants mainly convert iron ore into iron in blast furnaces and then steel through basic oxygen furnaces.
EAF/mini-mill producers generally have advantages in scrap recycling, production flexibility, lower dependence on coking coal and potential for lower carbon emissions, particularly when renewable electricity is used.
Traditional integrated producers have advantages in very large-scale production, captive iron ore resources, high-volume flat steel production and integrated raw-material supply.
India's EAF sector is significant, but the country's electric-steel industry also includes a very large number of induction-furnace producers. Therefore, the broader mini-mill sector is considerably larger than the five major organised companies listed above.
